Peyton Swartwout hit for the cycle over the course of the doubleheader and Makayla Esau had four extra-base hits as the Panthers split a doubleheader against Finger Lakes Community College on Friday. Game One: Tompkins Cortland 6, Finger Lakes 5
Swartwout was the star of game one, shining on both sides of the ball. At the plate she had a double and triple with three runs scored, including the first and last runs for the Panthers. In the circle, she pitched another complete game, matching her season best with 10 strikeouts, including the last out of the game with the tying run on third base. Esau and Brooklynn Seiger each went 2-for-3, with Seiger ripping a double and a triple and Esau poking a double.
Game Two: Finger Lakes 10, Tompkins Cortland 9
The Panthers led game two from the second batter until the next to last batter. After Elizabeth Martin opened the game with a single, Swartwout blasted a homer to put the Panthers up early. By the time the inning ended, the Panthers had scored four runs. The lead stood at 9-7 after four innings, and remained the same heading into the bottom of the seventh. In their last ups, Finger Lakes took advantage of two errors, a wild pitch, and a delayed steal of home to walk off with the 10-9 win.
Esau was 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles and Swartwout was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI. Martin deserved a better result in the circle, pitching the entire way while striking out seven and allowing six earned runs. The freshman also went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored at plate.
