Defensive miscues proved costly on Monday as the Panthers lost both ends of a doubleheader at Erie Community College. TC3 is now 3-13 overall and Region 3 play. Erie moves to 12-12 overall and 11-5 in region.
Game One: Erie 13, Tompkins Cortland 2 (five innings)
The Panthers scored first, but a total of eight errors proved too much to overcome. After TC3 scored two in the top of the first, Erie answered with five in the bottom of the frame. Two innings later the home team put things away with eight runs in the bottom of the third. Of the 13 runs scored by Erie, only two were earned.
Elizabeth Martin led off the game with a single and came around to score the first run. Matisyn Lord had the only other hit and run scored for the Panthers, also coming in the first inning.
Game Two: Erie 8, Tompkins Cortland 2
Erie jumped ahead with five runs over the first two innings and eventually led 8-0 in the middle of the sixth inning. TC3 scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game going, but could get no closer.
Peyton Swartwout had two hits, including a double, while also pitching the complete game and allowing just four earned runs. Matisyn Lord drove in a run while registering a hit in both ends of the doubleheader.
Swartwout had a great effort in the circle against a team averaging more than 10 runs per game. She pitched all six innings, striking out eight, and didn't allow a baserunner over the last two innings.
Looking ahead
