Playing at home for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Panthers hosted #6-ranked Corning Community College for a doubleheader on Thursday. After losing the opener 10-0 the Panthers pushed the Red Barons to the limit in game two before falling 5-2. TC3 is now 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Corning improves to 23-4 overall and 6-0 in the MSAC.
Game One: Corning 10, Tompkins Cortland 0 (five innings)
The Panthers put runners on base in each of the first four innings but couldn't advance any past second base. Corning jumped ahead with three in the first and kept adding on to end the game early due to the run rule.
Peyton Swartwout had one of TC3's three hits, and the lone extra-base hit, when she laced a double in the third.
Game Two: Corning 5, Tompkins Cortland 2
The Red Barons again scored three runs in the first inning to jump ahead. The Panthers scored their first run of the day in the third inning, with Sofia Lorenzo starting the rally with a single, moving to second on a two-out single by Elizabeth Martin and then coming across the plate on an RBI single by Swartwout.
The Panthers managed just one runner over the next three innings, while Corning added two more runs in the fourth to lead 5-1 heading to the seventh. Brooklynn Seiger led off the seventh with a single, moved to third on a single by Makayla Esau, and came in when Lorenzo grounded into a fielder's choice. Lorenzo moved to second on a groundout, but was stranded when the Corning shortstop made a nice diving catch on a line drive to end the game.
Swartwout had a great effort in the circle against a team averaging more than 10 runs per game. She pitched all six innings, striking out eight, and didn't allow a baserunner over the last two innings.
Looking ahead
The Panthers are scheduled to play at Erie Community College on Saturday.
