The Panthers baseball team continued its Spring Break trip to Florida with a non-region doubleheader against Westchester Community College on Sunday. The Panthers lost both games, 11-3 and 8-3, to fall to 0-4 on the trip and 1-8 overall on the season.
Game One: Westchester 11, Tompkins Cortland 3
The Panthers held their first lead of the trip in game one, plating three runs in the top of the first inning, Dominic Zona led off with an infield hit and stole second. Jake Malkowski followed with a walk, and after a pair of strikeouts, Logan Meerburg was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Easton Podbeusek delivered two runs with a single to center, giving the Panthers their first lead of the trip. Meerburg ended the inning by crossing the plate with a third run, but the lead was quickly erased when the Vikings scored five times in the bottom of the frame. While the offense dried up for the Panthers, Westchester tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to make the final margin.
Podbeusek led the six-hit attack by going 2-for-3.
Game Two: Westchester 8, Tompkins Cortland 3
The Panthers again scored three runs on six hits, but the scoring came later in game two. Westchester moved ahead with a run in the first and five in the second, with the Panthers plating all three of their runs in the fifth as Podbeusek again drove in a pair of runs and Aiden Huften pushed across the other run with an RBI double. The Vikings responded with two runs in the sixth to provide the final 8-3 margin.
