The Tompkins Cortland Community College Sports Medicine department provides care for the College's student-athletes. The department also staffs the athletic training room, and provides preventative care, management of injuries, and rehabilitative services. The goal of the department is to keep all student-athletes healthy, or, if injured, return them to proper playing condition as soon as possible.
All student-athletes must undergo an approved physical exam before they can participate on a Tompkins Cortland Community College athletic team. Contact Athletic Trainer Amy Voorhees for information.
There are two ways that this can be accomplished:
Our team doctors will be on campus at the start of fall training seasons to conduct physicals. If you have any pre-existing conditions that may cause concern (i.e. - surgery, cardiac tests, respiratory tests), please bring the appropriate records from your doctor regarding these issues, including office notes, surgical reports, and imaging studies. Bringing these records with you will help prevent delays with clearance for your participation. This physical costs $60 (cash or check made out to Tompkins Cortland Community College Athletic Department).
Another option is to take the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form (2-pages) to your own doctor and have your doctor perform the exam and complete the form. PLEASE NOTE: This is the only physical form that will be accepted for participation on our teams. The form must be filled out completely. Any “yes” answers must be thoroughly explained and all related medical records must be included. You then send the completed form to the Athletic Trainer's Office and our team doctors will review your physical form and medical records and make the final decision on medical clearance for your participation.
Please be aware that if our team doctors are not confident that your participation does not put you at an increased health risk from the information you have provided, you may need to attend the Preparticipation Physical Exam on campus or provide our doctors with more information.
If you are having your own doctor perform your physical, it is very important that you get all of your paperwork to the Athletic Trainer's Office by the appropriate deadline - Missing this deadline could delay your clearance to start practice. For 2017, fall sports the deadline is August 1. For winter and springs sports the deadline is August 25.
